Adaptive equipment and technology assistance are truly life changing for many children. Adaptive tools are designed for people with disabilities or special healthcare needs, helping them do more, experience more, and build on their abilities. At Phoenix Home Care, we understand the importance of this technology for daily function and quality care, especially for those dependent on ventilators or other medical devices. It’s why we make sure our nurses are qualified to offer services that meet the requirements of the Technology Assisted Waiver Program to families in need.
Adaptive Equipment and Services
A wide range of adaptive technology is available these days. Adaptive devices can be high-tech, like an iPad app, or they can be low-tech, like a wall calendar that helps a child organize their day. They can help with movement, communication, reading, writing, speech, organization, and hearing – or simply managing daily life.
Technology assistance can also come in the form of medically necessary equipment, like a wheelchair, ventilator, or even hospital-level home care. These are the types of equipment and services that Kansas families can qualify for through the Technology Assisted Waiver Program. Additional examples of medically necessary equipment include walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, power scooters, seat lifts, hospital beds, home oxygen equipment, diabetes testing equipment, and certain nebulizers (source).
About the Technology Assisted Waiver Program
The Technology Assisted Waiver Program serves Kansas children ages 0 through 21 years who are chronically ill or medically fragile and dependent upon a ventilator or medical device to compensate for the loss of vital bodily function. The program also supports children who require substantial and ongoing daily care by a nurse, comparable to the level of care provided in a hospital setting.
If your child is hospitalized or at imminent risk of hospitalization because of his or her illness or disability, he or she may be eligible for this program. Ultimately, the goal of the program is to support your child in the comfort of his or her own home, where your child’s physical and emotional needs can be met.
Is My Son or Daughter Eligible?
In addition to the medical technology dependency criteria, your son or daughter must meet the nursing acuity needs criteria that identify the level of skilled and unskilled care that is necessary to support him/her so that he/she may remain at home. Some of the criteria for eligibility include the following:
- Must have active Medicaid coverage
- Must be 0-21 years old
- Must meet the definition of medical fragility as determined by the MATLOC Eligibility Specialists (MES)
- Must require use of primary medical technology on a daily basis (i.e ventilator, Trach, G-tube feeding)
- Must meet medical and nursing acuity threshold
What Types of Services Are Available Through the Program?
Many services are available through the program, some of which are administered by either a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN) in the home. These services include the following:
- Health maintenance monitoring
- Intermittent intensive medical care service
- Specialized medical care
- Medical respite care
- Home modification services
