How to Reduce Pain In Joints Affected by Arthritis

Painful arthritic joints can make completing everyday tasks like getting dressed, doing housework, or even enjoying a walk difficult and painful. To live the most fulfilled and enjoyable life possible, it’s important to get arthritis pain under control. One of the best ways to manage chronic pain caused by arthritis is to enlist the help of your doctor and home health care provider.

At Phoenix Home Care & Hospice, our home health professionals can help you or a loved one manage their pain with convenient and regular in-home care. However, there are also several ways you can modify your daily routine to reduce pain in joints.

1. Stay physically active (but don’t overdo it)

Focus on gentle, daily stretches to move your joints through their full range of motion. However, certain types of exercise can make arthritis pain worse, so avoid repetitive motions like running for long periods, jumping, or high-impact aerobics. Always, always, always check with your doctor before performing any physical activity if you have limited mobility or have a diagnosis of arthritis.

2. Practice good posture

Sitting, standing, and moving correctly with good posture can help relieve pain caused by arthritis. Our home health aides can help you learn how to move correctly and improve your posture as you complete daily activities around your home.

3. Maintain a healthy weight

Being overweight can also cause complications that may increase your physical pain. To reduce physical pain, maintain a healthy weight by eating a healthy and diverse diet and exercising regularly. Our in-home care services can help you sustain a healthy lifestyle with individualized care that prioritizes health and nutrition. Make sure to discuss dietary needs with your doctor.

4. Quit smoking

Smoking puts stress on the connective tissues, which can increase arthritis pain. If you’re currently a smoker, it’s a good idea to taper back and quit for your overall health and wellness, as well as pain management.
