10 Simple Ways to Keep Your Home Warmer This Winter by Phoenix Home Care

Winter is here, and that means much colder temperatures. There are plenty of ways to keep your home warmer this winter. Today’s blog from Phoenix Home Care describes 10 simple things you can do to achieve a warmer home.

1. Use Rugs

Even if your home already has carpet, rugs can add an extra layer of warmth between you and your floor. Rugs are especially helpful if you have hardwood, tile, or vinyl flooring.

2. Let in More Sunlight

Sunlight warms up your home naturally, and it helps you or your loved one get more vitamin D while improving moods and killing dust mites. Phoenix Home Care recommends opening the blinds and curtains of your windows to let in more sunlight during the day.

3. Change the Furnace Filter

When was the last time you changed your furnace filter? If it’s been more than a month, perhaps you should change it out for a new one. Look at your old filter. If it’s dirty, replace it with a new one to maximize the effectiveness of your furnace’s airflow.

4. Wear Socks to Bed

It’s a simple thing. But wearing socks to bed can keep you cozy and warm. Keeping your feet warm when you’re sleeping reduces your chances of waking up due to cold feet. Good sleep is one of the most effective ways to let the body’s natural healing process work.

5. Close Curtains After Sunset

Earlier, we suggested opening your curtains during the day. Once the sun goes down, close your curtains. This traps more heat in your home and prevents some of it from escaping.

6. Put Plastic Bubble Wrap on Windows

Bubble wrap offers a cheap way to insulate your windows while allowing sunlight to come into your home. The bubble wrap forms a layer of insulation that keeps warm air in.

7. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans often have a reverse mode. Since warm air rises, ceiling fans can push warm air down to your level. Simply change your ceiling fan to reverse and keep it on the lowest setting. You only need to run ceiling fans when you’re in the room, so you use less electricity.

8. Cut Down on Mini Drafts

Phoenix Home Care notes there are several places in your home that may cause miniature drafts. Older windows, doggy doors, and gaps under doors that go to the outside can all cause small drafts. Use rolled-up towels to cover door gaps. Cover a doggy door with an old blanket or towel. Consider weatherstripping for small gaps in window frames.

9. Buy an Electric Space Heater

If you need more heat in one room, an electric space heater can give that room extra warmth. For safety reasons, Phoenix Home Care recommends electric heaters versus gas heaters. Portable electrical heaters cost around $20 to $30.

10. Bundle Up

Even though you’re indoors, bundle up when you move around the house. Wear an extra layer of clothing, cover with a blanket when you’re sitting down, and wear a comfy sweater or sweatshirt around the house.
