Steps to Make Your Home More Senior-Friendly

The staff of Phoenix Home Care is dedicated to helping the aging members of our community achieve the independence of home-living as they enter their final years. If you have noticed that mom or dad have trouble getting around their home, there are many steps that can be taken to make their home more senior-friendly

Fix or Clear Ground-Level Obstacles

The number one way to prevent falls is by creating smooth, uninterrupted walkways in the high traffic areas of the home.

  • Check the pathway into the home for cracks or uneven surfaces. If areas seem dangerous, consider repaving the areas to create smooth surfaces.
  • Add low-rise ramps instead of stairs if possible.
  • Add non-slip flooring in the entrance areas of the home.
  • Scuff or add non-slip strips on the exterior of the home to help improve footing in inclement weather.
  • If a home must have stairs, install rails on both sides. The rails should be relatively thick to accommodate aging grips (one-and-a-half to two inches in diameter).
  • Remove any unnecessary obstacles (ottomans, loose throw rugs, area carpets with curled edges, etc.)

Create a More Functional Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of any home. Developing a more accessible kitchen will go a long way to ensuring your senior loved one will stay safe and healthy.

  • Install appliances with easy-to-read controls and interfaces. Appliances that are easier to access and operate like wall ovens are a great addition to senior homes.
  • Microwave drawers are easier to access and help to increase available counter space.
  • Lazy susans and roll-out trays help your senior access items quickly and easily.
  • Lower the hot water heater temperature to ensure they don’t accidentally burn themselves.

Avoid Falls With a Safe Bathroom

Bathrooms are one of the most congested, accident-prone areas in a senior’s home. A few changes in the design and functionality can make a big difference in keeping your loved one independent.

  • Add slip prevention flooring and non-slip bath mats to reduce the risk of falling.
  • Install wall grips in the shower, tub, and toilet. These will not only help to prevent falls, but also allow seniors to retain independence in the restroom.
  • Install a fold-down seat or bench in the shower so they can rest and relax.
  • Install a hand-held shower head to make self-cleaning a much easier process.
  • Install plenty of light in the shower stall.
