Wellness Tips for Cold & Flu Season When Receiving In-Home Care

Cold and flu season is upon us. This time of year, seniors over the age of 65 are particularly vulnerable to the flu, and they are more likely to develop flu-related complications. That’s why it’s vitally important to stay healthy during winter months. Today’s blog from Phoenix Home Care describes some wellness tips for cold and flu season when receiving in-home care.

Get the Seasonal Flu Vaccine

The CDC recommends that seniors ages 65 and older get the seasonal flu vaccine, especially if they have chronic health conditions. Influenza is the fifth leading cause of death among people in this age group.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Fluids, especially water, help your body maintain optimal health by keeping you hydrated. Make sure you and your loved one receiving in-home care drink plenty of water throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to take one sip of water every 15 minutes. Have bottled water handy, and even keep a timer nearby to remind your loved one to take a sip.

Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods

Nutrient-rich foods, particularly ones high in vitamin C, can help your body ward off infections naturally.

Foods high in vitamin C include:

  • Orange juice
  • Citrus fruits
  • Green peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries

Always check with you or your loved one’s doctor before making dietary changes, including having more water.

Dress Warmly

Colder temperatures make it harder for your body’s immune system to protect your health. Research suggests that less sunlight and colder weather reduce your body’s immune response, making it harder to fight off germs. Dress in warm, loose-fitting clothing, have plenty of blankets on your bed, and wear socks to bed. As a side note, you might cover up as many drafts as possible in your house for some simple home maintenance tips to make in-home care easier.

Check on Your Loved One Daily

Check on your loved one daily, especially if they live alone. Make sure they’re healthy, happy, and comfortable. If you notice any changes or symptoms in your loved one, taking action sooner rather than later can alleviate complications from colds and flu.

In-home care offers a way to check on your loved one if your relative lives too far away or you’re juggling other responsibilities. Phoenix Home Care offers peace of mind, safety, security, and regular check-ups for people needing in-home care services for a variety of reasons.
